Poor little rich girl

I was looking for inspiration a few nights ago and was thumbing through other mom blogs (no, we’re not the only mom blog, just the best one) when I stumbled on a site I would normally have no interest in. It’s called something like Celebrity Baby Blog, I don’t even want to link to it, if you’re interested you’ll find it, it’s out there along with tons of others just like it. I’m one of those people that firmly believes celebrities are people just like us but they’re richer and they don’t get to fart in the grocery store or it’s news somehow. I tend to have little to no interest in what the celebs are doing so what pulled me in to such a site?

Honestly, mainly boredom and gawking at photos of fancy people with their children dressed to the nines, then I clicked a link that lead me to a certain celebrity’s baby shower. Now in this case the famous mama had three other children and was on baby #4, do average moms with three children still have baby showers? Don’t they have enough presents and hand-me-downs to ‘take it from here’? It seems a bit much. I’m not poo-pooing celebrations. Sure have a party, if there’s cake involved you know I’m there, but gifts?

Of course like many celebrity parties it was hosted by some hoity toity company that floated the whole fiasco for free. The famous mama was given a mountain of free, new, fabulous things from this company and her troup of kids were showered in presents accordingly. Why?

Why do rich and famous people get so much free stuff?! These are the people that can afford to purchase it. These are the people that love to go shopping and buy ridiculous things, that diamond encrusted high chair was designed for people that think such things are ‘fun’ or ‘neat’ and so they go buy them, they don’t need to have them gifted to them.

This annoys me on a deeper level if I think about it too much. Dare I venture to think about a truly needy mom somewhere. Did the hoity toity company think to offer free baby paraphernalia to anyone who really needs it? Did the celebrity, as she drove through L.A. with her S.U.V. full of flashy new gifts that she didn’t need, did it ever once occur to her that all around her were mothers that would do anything to have a stroller, or a pair of shoes for their little one?
Step over the homeless woman, don’t scuff your $800 shoes, don’t look down and accidentally catch their gaze, you might be too reminded of their humanity. In big cities you can see this stark contrast so clearly, or, you can choose to ignore it.
